K-Drama Review: Goblin: The Lonely and Great God (쓸쓸하고 찬란하神-도깨비)

In ancient times, Kim Shin (Gong Yoo) is an unbeatable general in wars, but the young King (Kim Min-Jae) is jealous of Kim Shin and kills him. Kim Shin becomes Dokkaebi (Goblin), possessing an immortal life. At first he thinks that he is blessed, but he realizes that he is cursed.

Closer to the present day, Kim Shin has waited 900 years for a human bride to end his immortal life. One night, he saves a dying pregnant woman (Park Hee-Von) who is destined to die. Meanwhile, the Grim Reaper (Lee Dong-Wook) is unable to find the dead pregnant woman. The woman gives birth to a baby girl named Ji Eun-Tak (later played by Kim Go-Eun). 9 years later, Ji Eun-Tak lives with her mother and is able to see ghosts. One night, her mother suddenly dies. On that night, she meets the Grim Reaper.

In the present day, Ji Eun-Tak is a high school student. She still sees ghosts and hears their whisper of “Dokkaebi’s bride.” She now lives with her aunt’s family, but she is mistreated by them. On her birthday, Ji Eun-Tak sits by the sea with a lighted birthday cake. At that time, Kim Shin suddenly appears in front of her. Kim Shin does not know why, but he can hear her voice and appears in front of her against his will. Coincidentally, Kim Shin lives with the Grim Reaper at the same house.

Now, Kim Shin appears in front of her against his will, whenever she turns off the lights. One day, Ji Eun-Tak tells him that he is Dokkaebi and she is his bride.

Plot: ★★★★★

So the first thing I want to say is this is a fantasy drama. So if you’re not into fantasy you won’t enjoy this. Second thing Kim Shin is not a Goblin in the way that we know Goblins in North American culture. In Korean culture a Goblin(dokkaebi) is a special creature that possess extraordinary powers that are used to interact with humans, at times playing tricks on them and at times helping them. The literal translation to English is Goblin but really we don’t have this type of creature in our culture.

Alright the plot. Well this plot was very detailed & to be honest I loved that about this drama. There are so many different layers & yet at the same time they’re all connected in such a deep way. It’s a well paced drama I was never bored in fact I actually was stressing that every week I had to wait for new episodes. Very interesting seeing the supernatural side of things as well, there was a lot of thought put into this drama. Also the comedy in this drama is fantastic. It’s super serious at times but they also know how to lighten it up with the comedy.

Characters: ★★★★★

What can I say other than the fact that I loved all of the characters. They all played such important roles in Kim Shin’s life & they added colour. The bromance between Grim Reaper and Kim Shin was so funny. I sincerely loved these characters & I’m still not over this drama.

Acting: ★★★★★

So I watched Kim Go Eun before & can I mention this is only her second drama & she’s proving to be such an incredible actress. Yook Sungjae is actually an idol who has started acting this is only his 3rd drama & he’s also doing a fantastic job. Gong Yoo is a veteran, but I haven’t seen any of his other dramas though I have to say I’m interested now since he did such a good job. Everyone really was just amazing no complaints at all.

Feels/Romance: ★★★★★

That gif perfectly describes this drama. There were so many cute/romance feels, but at the same time there was a lot of painful feels. They did not disappoint in this area at all. A lot of dramas don’t know how to balance both of these things well, but this one did it perfectly.

Ending: ★★★★★

I’m still not over this drama. The ending was exactly what it needed to be, but it evoked so many feels. I don’t cry easily & I didn’t cry, but when I think about it, it honestly makes my heart hurt & be happy at the same time. This drama is honestly fantastic.

Overall Enjoyment: ★★★★★

P.S. One last thing I want to mention is the OST’s for this drama are also amazing. The soundtrack is honestly so beautiful. Everything about this drama was done beautifully.
